This article explains the use of tags and work types when applying the Building and Construction On-site Award in Employment Hero Payroll
We have used a combination of employee tags, work types and shift conditions to allow your timesheets to be automatically interpreted according to the MA000020 Building and Construction Award
The Building and Construction General On-site Award has a lot of moving parts. Pay Cat has designed the award template to be extremely efficient for payroll managers to interpret the award, but easy enough for employees and supervisors to use.
How to think about pay conditions
We use tags, qualifications, work types and shift conditions to achieve the correct calculation.
Employee tags are things that affect the employee regardless of what job they work on, or what activities they perform on the job itself. Think of a tag like a permanent condition of employment.
Shift conditions, as the name implies, is a condition of the shift I am performing. These can be specific to the job or specific to the employee.
Lets consider two different businesses: Small Team Residential Constructions Pty Ltd and Large Team Contractors Pty Ltd.
Small Team Residential Constructions Pty Ltd always works on Residential buildings to provide new builds or renovations. For this reason, we would tag each employee with Industry - General Building & Construction - Residential Work [MA000020].
Large Team Contractors Pty Ltd are different. They will provide contract tradespersons to a variety of different jobs on a subcontractor basis, which may include residential and commercial sites. For this reason, we would not tag each employee with Industry - General Building & Construction - Residential Work [MA000020]. Instead, we would decide at the time of creating each job what type of industry sector it falls under. This might be any one of:
- Industry - Civil Construction [MA000020]
- Industry - General Building & Construction - Non Residential Work [MA000020]
- Industry - General Building & Construction - Residential Work [MA000020]
- Industry - Metal & Engineering Construction [MA00020]
So you can see that having the flexibility of deciding “this always happens”, or “this happens from one job to to the next”, or “this happens from one shift to the next” will help you decide the simplest way to handle some very complicated shift conditions.
This guide is broken down into tags (and their equivalent shift condition), Shift conditions, Work types and Qualifications. We will explain what happens when each is selected so you can make good choices when managing your time and attendance, job creation and employee onboarding.
Tag and Work Type Guide
We have used a combination of employee tags, work types and shift conditions to allow your timesheets to be automatically interpreted according to the award.
Work Types
You can enable work types for each employee so you can discern which is appropriate to their job. These are selected when completing a timesheet and are a single selection. A shift can be made up of different timesheets each with a different work type. Only one work type can be selected at a time.

Award Updates
30th June 2023
Pay rate templates have been updated to incorporate the Fair Work Commission's 2023-24 annual wage increase. The new conditions and rates of pay apply from the first full pay period commencing on or after 1 July 2023. Additionally, the pay categories and work types associated with work on service cores exceeding 15 metres above the highest point of the main structure have been refactored to better meet the conditions outlined in the award.
2nd February 2023
We have updated the award to reflect changes made as part of the Fair Work Decision regarding Paid Family and Domestic Violence Leave. Further information on what changes have been applied to the platform and what you should be aware of can be found within this article.
We have created the following new categories:
- New Leave Category: Paid Family and Domestic Violence Leave.
- New Pay Category: Paid Family and Domestic Violence Leave.
- New Work Type: Paid Family and Domestic Violence Leave taken.
We have updated the Leave Allowance Templates to disable the existing unpaid Family and Domestic Violence and we have enabled the new Paid Family and Domestic Violence Leave. We also updated any impacted rule conditions.
As part of Fair Work's ruling, an employee must be paid their full pay rate; this includes their base rate plus any incentive-based payments and bonuses, loadings, monetary allowances, overtime or penalty rates, and any other separately identifiable amount.
7th October 2022
This update includes a few changes to the rule set interpretation. This includes the following:
- Updating the rate paid for meal allowance
- Adjusting the overtime rules to exclude distant work payments
- Remove daily travel allowance applying on days which are leave
- Modify casual loading
It also introduces employment agreements for school based apprentices.
