This guide summarises the use of tags and work types for clients using the Pay Cat Wine Industry (MA000090) Award Template
We have used a combination of employee tags, work types and shift conditions to allow your timesheets to be automatically interpreted according to the Wine Industry Award 2020 (MA000090).
Work Types
You can enable work types for each employee so you can discern which is appropriate to their job. These are selected when completing a timesheet and are a single selection. A shift can be made up of different timesheets each with a different work type. Only one work type can be selected at a time.

Paid and Unpaid Meal Breaks
The Pay Cat Wine Industry Award template has been built under the assumption that where an employee has taken a break, the break should be recorded on the timesheet. That is, there are no auto meal break rules.
The award requires breaks to be taken in the following durations:
- Day work: Within the first 5 hours
- Shiftwork: Within the first 4.5 hours (or up to 6 hours by agreement
Award Template Updates
17th December 2024
New pay rate templates have been created and added to the Grade 1 employment agreements to factor in the changes made by Fair Work's Review of the C14 and C13 rates in modern awards. Per the determination, these rates apply as of the 1st of January 2025, and the update should be installed from the first full pay period following.
30th June 2023
Pay rate templates have been updated to incorporate the Fair Work Commission's 2024-25 annual wage increase.
30th June 2023
Pay rate templates have been updated to incorporate the Fair Work Commission's 2023-24 annual wage increase. The new conditions and rates of pay apply from the first full pay period commencing on or after 1 July 2023. Additionally, a tweak has been made to the overtime rules to ensure that the correct penalty is applied to casual staff who work through a meal break at overtime rates.
27th June 2023 - Pay Condition Updates
Pay Cat have made several changes to the treatment of shiftwork based on feedback from beta testing. These changes include:
- Support for permanent night shift, with variations for permanent night shift working through a break
- Fixing an error which was previously defaulting paid breaks for shiftworkers on weekends to be treated as overtime rather than shiftwork penalties
- Distinguish between public holiday worked as shiftwork rather than day work. This affected if span of hours overtime should or should not be applied to the public holiday.
- Weekend penalties for day workers have been updated to exclude more shiftwork categories that were previously omitted
17th April 2023 - Initial Release
Pay Cat have developed the Wine Industry Award template. This improves on Employment Hero Payroll's Wine Industry Award template in the following ways:
- The new rule set can dynamically allocate day work versus shiftwork. The previous template only allowed the designation of day work or shiftwork by tag, meaning the allocation could only be made at the beginning of each pay period. This new change ensures businesses implementing a rolling roster or rosters with both day work and shiftwork can take advantage of automatic daywork / shiftwork assignment
- Permanent and casual employees are combined into a single rule set
- Pay condition rules have been mapped to Modern Award clauses to create a reference and audit trail for compliance and audit purposes.
- The new template corrects a known issue around identifying night shift worked as being 'after' 12 midnight rather than on or after 12 midnight
- The new template corrects a known issue around identifying afternoon shift worked as being 'after' 6PM rather than on or after 6PM.
- Rules have been simplified around meal breaks, paid breaks and receiving a penalty for working without a break
- Working without a break attracts '1.5x' the rate that should've applied. We have used separate pay categories instead of a rate multiplier to show this clearer in a pay run, as well as utilise roster warnings for this condition.
- Rule sets have been separated to deal with the Vineyard and Cella Door Sales stream. This makes onboarding easier when selecting a classification (employment agreement), with a dedicated rule set being used. This will ensure it is much easier to get different span of hours rules for different streams correct for users without a deep understanding of the Modern Award.
- Vintage period is now a shift condition. This will ensure a very specific date can be used to enter a vintage season and can be selected differently for different vineyards. Previously this was an across the board designation using an employee tag.
- Rules around applying overtime to public holidays as separate to ordinary hours worked on a public holiday.
