Enhancements to employee ETP Opening Balances and Changes to Prevent Negative Leave Balances

Lets take a look at some of the new Employment Hero Payroll features announced in  December 2022
What is it?

A new setting will be available to businesses, allowing them to configure whether each leave category allows a negative leave balance.

Why does it matter?

Employees can apply for leave in excess of their available balance. Some businesses allow employee leave balances to go into a negative amount, whereas others do not. Suppose a business does not allow negative leave balances. In that case, it is currently a manual process to amend either the leave request or pay run and allocate the excess amount to an unpaid leave category.

How does it work?

If the leave category does not allow negative leave balances, the system will automatically calculate and apply the portion of unpaid leave when the leave is applied to the pay run, based on the leave request and available leave balance.

What is it?

When the opening balances functionality was introduced in the platform, employers were required to report payroll data each financial year to the ATO via payment summary annual reports.

Why does it matter?

For several years now, Single Touch Payroll has replaced payment summaries as the predominant reporting method for employers.

How does it work?

Employment Hero Payroll will be making changes to the existing opening balances functionality to ensure reporting of ETPs is correct and to also improve user experience. These improvements include:

  1. Changes to ETP pay categories in "Earnings" tab
  2. Moving earnings from deleted system pay categories
  3. Redesign of ETP functionality
  4. Adding a payment date to existing ETP records
  5. API changes to employee opening balances
